READING
Rape, Racism, and the Capitalist Setting by Angela Y. Davis
After reading the report of an online rape academy, it is with a very heavy heart that I am returning to a long read from Angela Y. Davis. Davis reminds us that systemic atrocities are not unsolvable mysteries. Every hell humans have created can be remade by us. There’s nothing polite I can add to this conversation. Please take care of yourselves and each other.
Watching
It was Just an Accident (2025)
“It Was Just an Accident” wrestles with the complete devastation of post-Civil War society. What happens when your captor is now sitting in a coffee shop with you? How do you embody transformative justice when revenge is readily available? Without delving into the plot details, I invite you to let this film wash over you. This may be PG-13, but it is not a light watch, so leave ample time to sit with it.

Normal Gossip: Teenage Cop Camp w/ Josie Duffy Rice
I typically enjoy this light-hearted podcast over a margarita and a luscious bean dip. However, this episode is about a CIA role-playing summer camp - EEK - Luckily, Josie Duffy Rice provides a constant interrogation of the distance between copaganda* and the reality of the “justice” system. Check it out if you like to laugh while you learn. Available wherever you get podcasts.

Creating
Chocolate Baked Oats
I’ve been starting my day with these chocolate-baked oats. They’re yummy and simple:
1 ½ cups oats, blended
2 eggs or 1 banana
1/3 cup of cacao powder
1/2 cup of your choice of yogurt
¼ cup of honey
½ cup nut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
optional: scoop of protein powder, nut butter for topping, and a sprinkle of sea salt
I combine all the ingredients at once in a bowl because this is more of a dump cake than a precise loaf. Bake in a lined loaf pan (or whatever you have) at 350 until set, about 20 mins. Top with your choice of nut butter(I thin mine out with water) and a sprinkle of sea salt.
Happy May, Readers!
